  1. Serious side effects are unlikely to occur unless this product is used for a prolonged time or in doses that are too high. Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur

    • Slow/irregular heartbeat
    • Mental/mood changes
    • Muscle weakness
    • Persistent diarrhea
    • Severe/persistent stomach/abdominal pain
    • Bloody stools
    • Rectal bleeding

    A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including

    • Rash
    • Itching/swelling
    • Severe dizziness
    • Trouble breathing

    Other things to note

    • Mild abdominal discomfort/cramps, gas, or nausea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
    • Persistent diarrhea may result in a serious loss of body water . Contact your doctor promptly if you notice any symptoms of dehydration, such as unusual decreased urination, unusual dry mouth/increased thirst, lack of tears, dizziness/lightheadedness, or pale/wrinkled skin.

    Precautions

    • For capsule products : Read directions carefully before start of therapy. Take with a full glass of water (8 ounces). Best to take with a meal to lessen stomach upset. Inform MD or pharmacist of medications you use. May cause diarrhea. Avoid other medicines containing the same drug. Maintain a well balanced diet.
    • For solution, oral products : Follow directions carefully. Not recommended for use in children. Do not use if bm is missed for 1 or 2 days. Chilling before drinking improves taste. Over use can cause bowel dependence. Review all drugs you are taking with your doctor. Drink extra water to avoid dehydration. Call doctor if change in bm lasts for 2 weeks.
    • For tablet, chewable products : Chew medicine completely before swallowing. Follow directions on best place to keep drug supply.

    Overview

    This product is used to clean stool from the intestines before surgery or certain bowel procedures (such as colonoscopy, radiography), usually with other products. It may also be used for relief of constipation. However, milder products (such as stool softeners, bulk-forming laxatives) should be used whenever possible for constipation.
