While it has been rumored for a while, Nintendo has now officially confirmed that the 3DS and Wii U eShops will be closing shop permanently. Previously, the window for a potential closure was “late March” 2023, but Nintendo confirmed in a blog post yesterday that the online stores will close on March 27, 2023.

Beginning on March 27, 2023, users will permanently become unable to make new purchases through the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U consoles' eShop. Users will also not be able to download free software through the eShop, including demos for games, and will not be able to redeem games via digital download codes.

Nintendo has given specific dates for the closing of the 3DS and Wii U eShops. As revealed earlier today on July 19, the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop will finally be closing its doors for good next year on March 27, 2023.

Nintendo has reiterated that other services, such as online play, will not be shut down on Wii U and 3DS at this time. The Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops will be discontinued in "late March 2023," Nintendo announced today, effectively closing off access to a host of content that can only be found on those platforms.
