A handful of aldermen objected to lowering speed limits across the city, suggesting Chicago take a more targeted approach to lowering driving speeds by neighborhood.

The ordinance to lower the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph won't get a City Council vote for weeks. The committee also OK'd a pilot program that would issue tickets based on residents' photos of scofflaws parked in bike lanes.

But Chicago drivers won’t soon face lower speed limits — or corresponding lower thresholds on most roads for the city’s extensive network of automated speed cameras to issue tickets.
