Discovered in January 2023, A3 reached the closest point in its orbit to the Sun, known as perihelion, on Sept. 27, followed by its closest point to Earth on Oct. 12. The comet takes an estimated 80,000 years to complete a single orbit of the Sun .

In one of the cooler videos and timelapses you will see today, our station camera that sits atop Mt. Mansfield (Vermont's highest peak) was able to capture a timelapse of Comet A3 as it zoomed past our lens late last night.
