This isn't the first time RNA has been honored recently. The molecule has been something of a scientific darling of late: last year, Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their fundamental discovery that made mRNA-based vaccines possible, a development that transformed the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the late 1980s, Ambros and Ruvkun were postdoctoral researchers in the laboratory of Robert Horvitz, who received the Nobel Prize in 2002 with Sydney Brenner and John Sulston. In Horvitz's laboratory, they studied the relatively inconspicuous, 1-mm long roundworm C elegans.

Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun have been honoured with the Nobel Prize for Medicine. The Nobel Prize committee decided in favour of their "groundbreaking discovery" of "microRNA".
