BMW has not explicitly said that the Skytop is based on the BMW M8 Convertible, but the engine says as much. It's a 4.4-liter mill generating the same 617 horsepower (625 PS) as the M8 Competition, and power goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. BMW claims a 0-62 mph time of roughly 3.3 seconds.

BMW has confirmed that it will put the Concept Skytop it brought to this year’s Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza into production. The German marque plans to build just 50 examples of the two-seater, but the fact that it’s going into production at all is a victory for anyone who appreciated beautiful automotive design.

At the time it was unveiled, however, BMW said the Skytop Concept would not be made into a production car due to costs. But due to incessant demand from customers with deep pockets, the automaker eventually changed their minds and said the Skytop would be turned into a production car.

BMW only last year built a limited run, again 50 examples, of a modern 3.0 CSL based on the platform of the 4-Series. And the automaker's design chief, Adrian van Hooydonk, said at the reveal of the Skytop that the automaker is open to similar projects in the future.
