A pilot program testing AI-powered weapons scanners inside some New York City subway stations this summer did not detect any passengers with firearms — but falsely alerted more than 100 times.

A 30-day pilot program of using scanners to detect weapons in the subway is over. According to the NYPD, some 2,749 scans done during the pilot program. There were 118 false positives, the NYPD said.

The results are in. The scanners the NYPD tried using to catch guns at subway turnstiles did not get the job done. Critics of the technology say what is even more troubling is the fact that over 100 people were stopped by police due to so-called false positives.

NYPD officials said late Wednesday that the controversial Evolv weapons scanners Mayor Adams’ administration rolled out in the MTA subway system detected 12 knives and no guns over the course of a month-long pilot program this summer.
