Whether a 2-year-old beaver named Nibi gets to stay with the rescuers she has known since she was a baby or must be released into the wild as winter approaches in Massachusetts has ended up in court — and caused such an uproar that even the governor has weighed in.

Nibi the Beaver, a social media sensation for nearly two years, will stay with her rescue group for now. The orphaned beaver was taken in by Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Sturbridge, Massachusetts at a very young age and has grown up there.

A court hearing scheduled for Friday could determine the future of Nibi, a two-year-old orphaned beaver currently residing at Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford, United States. The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife had planned to release Nibi into the wild on Tuesday.
